Deepak Chopra's son Gotham is here to hire a lady love for Nicolas Cage in his spiritual film The Sadhu. Gotham Chopra wears his legacy lightly. The 32-year-old-son of surgeon for the soul Deepak Chopra changed his name from Gautam to that of Batman's city because it was easier for Americans to spell. Now Gotham's on a mission to take the real India to the West by making blockbuster films that come alive through comic books.
"The comic builds up the whole subculture of a Spiderman, a Batman. And the film caps it off,"he says.
A journalist who's been shot at in Croatia, bunkered in Afghanistan and slum-walked through Mumbai, does he now want to make a quick buck by stereotyping Indian mythology? He replies, "I'm here to spark a creative renaissance in India. India should be seen as a source of creativity in itself." Shekhar Kapur is directing Gotham's The Sadhu (screenplay to be written by father Deepak) which has Nicolas Cage playing the title role that was originally created for a comic book.
"I told Nick it's the story of an Indian spiritual warrior, the equivalent of a Samurai — and this is an all round action flick,"Gotham says. Buzz has it either Shah Rukh Khan or Amitabh Bachchan will play the guru. So who is it? "Well there are definitely roles that will require Indian actors. Nick needs an Indian love interest, and I did meet with Priyanka Chopra, but I can't comment on the choice for the role because it isn't final yet,"he admits. Has he ever felt burdened by being Deepak Chopra's son? "Well I am what I am because of who I am."And how did this pal of playboy Vikram Chatwal and acquaintance of Anand Jon escape being part of the NRI brat pack? "I grew up privileged, but not spoilt. I actually didn't really understand what it meant to be Indian — though I spent summers in India — until I started to do this. My work makes me more conscious of my Indianness in a very different kind of way,"he says.
